A team of Williamsburg Architects looked at the Gwaltney Store, Spady House and Chapman House during their recent visit to Chuckatuck.
During a recent inspection Colonial Williamsburg architects dated the Gwaltney store to the early 1800’s. Cut nails and woo
d
cut by pit type saws were used in its construction. Evidence of these indications are very visible in the attic which appears to have had little or no changes in over 200 years. This certainly says something for the way buildings were constructed in the early days of our country. Carolyn Keen, a local stores historian, believes that this store was originally built as a beautiful family home.
