Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department is teeing up and heating the oil for two fundraisers to help it provide vital emergency services to the surrounding community.
The first, the department’s biannual fish fry, is set for Sept. 28 at the station, 300 Kings Highway, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Volunteer firefighter Casey Ohmsen said the June fish fry served more than 1,700 folks.
“Our entire bay was completely filled with members of the local community, from 2-year-olds being showed around the fire truck to the elderly who have been here since the founding of the fire department,” he said.
The night before the fish fry, Ohmsen said, Ruritans and other community members pitch in at headquarters to peel hundred of pounds of potatoes.
Tickets, $9 in advance or $10 at the door, buy a filet of fish, potatoes, slaw, hush puppies and iced tea.
Tickets are available at Saunders Supply, Kelly’s Nursery, Kitty’s Beauty Salon, Bennett’s Creek Pharmacy, Tidewater Motorcycles, Jimmy’s Pizza and Subs, Farmers Feed and Seed, and Trophy World in Newport News.
Meanwhile, teams and sponsors are sought for the sixth annual Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department Charity Golf Tournament, Oct. 12 at Sleepy Hole Golf Course, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Tickets, $80 per person or $320 for a team of four, buy greens fees and a cart, range balls, catered lunch and five beverage tickets (beer and soda).
“We have the beverage cart going around to make sure all the refreshments are available, and there’s a catered lunch afterward and awards ceremony,” Ohmsen said.
Co-workers, families and buddies could field teams, he suggested.
The tournament is the weekend of Peanut Fest, he pointed out, meaning folks can enjoy some festive golf and lunch, then head on out to the airport for more fun.
Doughnuts and coffee will precede the golf, Ohmsen added.
The ultimate fundraising goal for the tournament is $11,000, he said, adding it has typically garnered about $6,000 in previous years.
Businesses can also sponsor the tournament, with basic sponsorship including a yard sign and line of text near a tee box for $175, and corporate sponsorship, with full-color sign at a tee box and complimentary four-man team and beverages, costing $500.
“It cost a lot of money to outfit a volunteer fire department, and that’s what it goes to,” Ohmsen said. “It keeps the lights on and makes sure the trucks have the appropriate tools and equipment.”
